It's animated, and a game -- and highly educational

Campus animator Bob Burnett clearly loves his work. He happily discussed all aspects of it during a recent interview, moving easily from the cooperative habits of 3-D animators, to the amped-up software created by new computer games, to the prototype of a simulated brewery that just helped food engineering professor R. Paul Singh win a federal grant.

Listen awhile, though, and it becomes clear not just that Burnett is the right guy for his job, but that UC Davis could easily see wider use of instructional animation in the years ahead, especially in 3-D.

ALERT! Hoax email threatens recipients

A new email hoax uses intimidation in an attempt to coax recipients into paying the sender $8,000. The email states that "someone you call your friend, wants you dead" and demands that the recipient respond to a specific email address to make arrangements to hear the "tape of my discussion with the person who wants you dead" so that "you can use it to take legal action."

New campus IT architect is hired, will start Aug. 4

David Walker, director of advanced technology in the UC Office of the President, has been hired as campus information technology architect at UC Davis. He will report to Pete Siegel, chief information officer and vice provost for Information and Educational Technology, and start his new job Aug. 4.

Campus wireless network fully restored

Engineers and technicians from the campus Network Operations Center have restored all of the locations that lost access to the campus wireless network Tuesday during a hardware failure. Most of the sites were working again as of 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, and the rest were repaired this morning.

Partial outage to wireless network should end Wednesday morning

A hardware failure rendered a large part of the campus wireless network unavailable Tuesday, but Network Operations Center engineers and technicians are fixing the problem. They estimated Tuesday afternoon that wireless access on the core campus would be restored by 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 18. Wireless access to remote campus locations should be restored by noon.

MyUCDavis course tools will not be retired this fall

There's a lot of information available about SmartSite, so this particular fact might be easy to overlook. But it is crucial news for faculty: the course-management tools in MyUCDavis will not be retired this fall. They will be available until early 2010 at least.
